Solution focused hypnotherapy - Is it an effective therapy?

Writer's picture: Caroline HendenCaroline Henden

If you are the kind of person that has tried other therapies but didn't get the results that you wanted, ask yourself why. Were you expecting to receive help from the counsellor or therapist but were disappointed because it was not what you were expecting?

Maybe you were expecting something from them that they could not offer you. I went to a counsellor once but came away feeling worse than I did before I arrived. In this case I believe the person was possibly not correctly trained, since she didn't make any notes and told me I didn't need to give her my real name! This can be a problem as not all complimentary therapies are regulated. As clients in need we often trust everyone without checking their qualifications. Hypnotherapy is often regarded with suspicion and may not be taken seriously by some people who are familiar with stage hypnotism. Some people fear that they will lose control and say or do something without being aware. No....I will not make you cluck like a chicken...a common misconception about hypnosis. Some ask suspiciously 'Are you going to hypnotise me?'

Lets get it clear right now! Hypnotherapy is intended to help you and not to make you embarrassed, lose control or make a monkey out of you.

Trance is a natural state, like being engrossed in a good film or thinking so deeply whilst driving that you don't remember all the journey. It is a pleasant experience where your awareness is heightened and focused on my voice whilst you are in a relaxed state. You will always be aware of what is being said. Hypnos was the Greek god of sleep so you can see where the word hypnotherapy comes from. There is nothing to fear from listening to my voice, so that I can speak words of relaxation and positivity to your subconscious mind.

The session isn't just about you going into trance. We will speak first and then you will have a hypnosis of between 20 to 30 minutes. You will be offered a number of sessions depending on your individual situation and you will be asked to listen to a recording every night as far as possible until your next session which ideally would be around a week later.

As the name 'solution focused' suggests we will work on helping you to feel better and not be repeatedly concentrating on your problems. We will focus on 'what's been good', opening your mind to new ways of thinking. The aim is for you to become less attached to past events and not have physical responses in your body when a thought comes to mind.

It's not a quick fix, its worth putting in the effort for a happier daily life instead of working round unpleasant feelings and situations.
